Gajah Sumatera (Elephas maximus sumatranus) merupakan mamalia bertubuh besar yang keberadaannya terancam punah di alam. Kelestarian gajah menurun karena perusakan habitat gajah, konflik gajah dengan manusia dan perburuan gading gajah. Konflik antara gajah dengan manusia dapat memberikan kerugian baik secara psikologi, materi, dan korban jiwa bagi manusia maupun gajah. Salah satu tempat terjadi konflik gajah dengan manusia terjadi di Desa Seumanah Jaya Kabupaten Aceh Timur dengan intensitas konflik yang berbeda. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui persepsi masyarakat yang mengalami konflik gajah-manusia dengan intensitas ringan, sedang, dan berat terhadap konflik gajah-manusia di Desa Seumanah Jaya Kabupaten Aceh Timur. Penelitian ini meggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dan jenis penelitian deskriptif. Penelitian dilakukan di Desa Seumanah Jaya Kabupaten Aceh Timur. Pengumpulan data dengan angket, observasi dan wawancara. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif dan diuji menggunakan uji Chi Kuadrat pada taraf kepercayaan 95%. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hasil uji Chi Kuadrat diperoleh nilai X2hitung > X2tabel (609,65 > 12,59) dan Ha diterima. Simpulan dari penelitian ini adalah persepsi masyarakat yang mengalami konflik dengan intesitas ringan, sedang, dan berat terhadap konflik gajah dengan manusia di Desa Seumanah Jaya sudah baik.

The Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) is a large mammal whose existence is threatened with extinction in the wild. The conservation of elephants is decreasing due to the destruction of elephant habitat, elephant conflicts with humans and poaching of elephant ivory. Conflicts between elephants and humans can cause psychological, material and loss of life for both humans and elephants. One of the places where elephant-human conflicts occur is in Seumanah Jaya Village, East Aceh Regency with different conflict intensities. The purpose of this study was to determine the perception of people who experienced human-elephant conflict with mild, moderate, and severe intensity of human-elephant conflict in Seumanah Jaya Village, East Aceh Regency. This study uses a quantitative approach and the type of descriptive research. The research was conducted in Seumanah Jaya Village, East Aceh Regency. Data collection by questionnaires, observations and interviews. The data were analyzed descriptively and tested using the Chi Square test at the 95% confidence level. The results showed that the results of the Chi Square test obtained the value of X2count > X2table (609.65 > 12.59) and Ha was accepted. The conclusion of this study is that the perception of people who experience conflict with light, medium, and heavy intensity on elephant-human conflicts in Seumanah Jaya Village is good.
