Judul : Pengaruh Reward dan Punishment dalam Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris (Survei Studi di SMPN 18 Banda Aceh)

Hukuman dan Hadiah dikenal sebagai cara untuk menjaga aktivitas kelas dan meningkatkan motivasi belajar siswa. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis reward dan punishment yang diterapkan di SMPN 18 Banda Aceh. Selain jenisnya, penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh reward dan punishment. Data diperoleh dengan menggunakan dua jenis instrumen yaitu wawancara dan angket. Instrumen penelitian dibagikan kepada tiga orang guru pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di SMPN 18 Banda Aceh untuk mencakup hasil dari seluruh kelas. Hasilnya ditemukan bahwa ada dua jenis imbalan yang paling banyak digunakan guru: 1) imbalan berupa kata-kata pujian atau imbalan lisan dan 2) imbalan nyata (fisik). Selain itu, ada dua jenis hukuman yang paling sering digunakan guru: 1) hukuman kata dan kalimat, dan 2) hukuman ketidaknyamanan. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa reward dan punishment mempengaruhi kemampuan bahasa Inggris siswa. Meskipun imbalan dapat mendorong siswa untuk meningkatkan kinerjanya atau mengulangi tindakannya, hukuman dapat menghentikan mereka dari perilaku yang tidak menyenangkan.

Title : The Effect of Rewards and Punishments in learning English (A Study Survey at SMPN 18 Banda Aceh) Punishment and Rewards are known as the way to maintain classroom activity and increase students' motivation to learn. Therefore, this research aims to determine the kinds of rewards and punishments applied in SMPN 18 Banda Aceh. Besides the kinds, this research also aims to determine the effects of rewards and punishments. The data was obtained using two types of instruments, i.e., interviews and questionnaires. The research instrument was distributed to three teachers of English language lessons teaching in SMPN 18 Banda Aceh to cover the results from all of the classes. The results found that there are two types of rewards that the teachers mainly use: 1) praise words or verbal rewards and 2) tangible rewards (physical). Additionally, there are two types of punishment that the teachers mainly used: 1) word and sentence punishment and 2) inconvenience punishment. The results show that rewards and punishment affect students’ English. While rewards can encourage students to improve their performance or repeat the action, punishments could stop them from unpleasant behavior.
